I rushed back to my room to shower before I headed to work for a few hours. Mom was laying across my bed watching tv with Starburst wrappers littering the floor.
âFinally, girl. I thought you would never get back from that gym. I donât know how you young girls do it. I hate working out. A girl should only sweat doing one thing!â
âEw, Mom.â I peeled off my wet clothes and tossed them into the hamper in the closet. âMom, that detective called. Someone spotted you; you have to be more careful!â I urged.
She blew right past my statement. âAnyway. I think I figured out a way for us to kidnap one of them cops from Tunica Rivers.â She danced in place.
âMom, we talked about this. I am not kidnapping a cop.â I grumbled as I checked my phone. No texts from Will. Or Chaquille. Or King. I stopped by Kingâs house with Chaquille before I left Tunica Rivers and Trent said he was on the road and that I should text him. Not call him, text him. What great parenting Sidney wanted to leave us for. Mom wore a large onesie we had picked up from the consignment shop and she wrapped her hair in a towel and a plastic bag while she deep conditioned her hair.
âMom, make sure you donât get none of that oil on the bed,â I pointed.
âOh girl, donât worry, Iâve been doing this longer than youâve been alive. Do you think you can get your hands on a white van?â she asked. She had a crazed look on her face and her head shook from side to side.
âMom, where would I get a white van from?â
âI donât know, Indy. But you could be a bit more helpful here,â she scoffed. âIâm coming up with all the solutions, and all you do is spend time with your boyfriend and your friends. And when are you going to let me meet this, Chaquille?â
I bit my lip. âI did tell him about you. Not about you being here, of course. But he knows youâre not at Trochesse.â Convincing Chaquille to spend our time in his own room these days instead of my own was easier than I thought it would be. As long as I was next to him, he didnât care where we slept. He trusted me, and I wasnât sure how I felt about that.
Mom hopped off the bed and oil slid down her neck and arms, seeping into my sheets. âWell bring that man over here! He got a daddy? Tell him to bring him too.â Mom danced around my room. She hooted and grabbed my hips, shaking them from side to side. âJust quit this college thing girl, letâs go on tour. I can teach you how to play the drums while I sing. The FatCats will be back like we never left.â Mom gyrated her pelvis in front of me.
I giggled. âIâm running late and have to get to the office to write.
